Project Type
Artistic Project for the conclusion of a discipline
Location
Burnaby Mountain, BC, Canada
Date
Fall 2018
This art project was created during the fall of 2018 as part of the course Ideas and Issues in Aesthetic Education (EDUC 848) taught by Dr. Celeste Snowber in the Master of Arts in Art Education program at Simon Fraser University. Inspired by the principles of “pedagogy of place,” the project consisted of regularly visiting a single location to observe and capture the lessons and inspirations that emerged from it.
For a month, I collected fallen leaves from the ground, treating each one as a unique work of art. I then took these leaves to a small forest located on Burnaby Mountain, where I was living at the time, and created art installations with them. During the creative process, I began to compose small melodies, which culminated in the recording of a video in which I sang the melody and presented the finished installation.
As an immigrant, the reflections that emerged from this project involved questions of belonging, respect, transformation, and the mark I leave in new lands.
